The Maine Guide was here today, dressed in hunter’s camouflage from head to toe even though it’s Sunday.  He puts up the people from New Jersey in the camp next door.  They’re going moose hunting in Jackman tomorrow.  They put their names in a lottery to get the chance to hunt an animal that moves at the pace of a cow.

In December they’ll come back to hunt bobcats.  They do it with dogs: baying beagles that tear through the snow and scare the cat up a tree.  There are dignified ways to die and there are stupid ways to kill.

Meanwhile, I go for a walk wearing bright orange and without my dogs, who are all different shades of soft, fawny brown and would run ahead of me, like deer, on the road.
